Aboriginal Art of Australia

Besides its beautiful beaches and world-class restaurants, Australia also offers incredible Aboriginal art.The first discoveries of Aboriginal art in the form of rock engravings and rock paintings are estimated to be 40,000 years old. It’s been said that the Aborigines devoted more time to art than any other race in history. Beyond painting rocks and caves, they used bark, sand, didgeridoos, boomerangs, their huts, and their bodies. Not only was their art elaborate but it was meaningful. It was used in place of written text to convey everything from politics and tribal law to history and religion.

Today, Aboriginal art continues to use a widespread spectrum of mediums including sculpture, water color, oil paint, crafts, and performance. Characterized by vivid bright colors, tribal patterns, meticulous seas of dots and lines that paint stimulating imagery of elements and life, Aboriginal art is beautiful and inspiring.

Sydney is a large supporter of Aboriginal cultural awareness and over the last 15 years, several Sydney galleries have merged and re-launched as one company: Aboriginal Art Galleries.  They have one of the largest collections in Sydney shared across 3 locations.  If you find yourself anywhere else in Australia, there are also Aboriginal Cultural Centers showcasing artwork in Melbourne, Canberra, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin, and Brisbane, to name a few.
